Then after the derby, we saw the son of the greatest. If came off quicker and started his run earlier, we would had the son of Secretariat as the TC winner.
Ummmmm, yeah right. No one would have known who she was? Santa Anita Derby anyone? Broke the stakes and track record that day… think about all the greats before her that won that race. Risen Star didn’t win the Derby, Winning Colors did.
You’d have to ask the Eddie delahousse @ that. If,if,if. Big Red broke from every position managing to win the TC Even after woody stevens vindictive instructions in the preakness she STILL placed third. What A FILLY.Don’t take anything away from her. She was GREAT!
Yes I remember Ruffian and that match race w/Foolish Pleasure. Broke my heart. Summer of 1975. She was great .But I’d also have to mention Gennie[Genuine Risk]-a bit of karma there for Lukas don’t you think. I still think Genuine Risk was interfered with in the ‘1980 Preakness.
Forget the name of the jockey who rode Codex-Angel Cordero-I just remembered! He was so arrogant @ the whole race, well the entire race. And there WAS interference. The stewards just didn’t want to deal with it is all. So pitiful on their part.
What a filly she is. From the start she led the race. Winning Colors showed everyone that she was a GREAT filly. RIP Winning Colors. She died February in 2008, and when I heard that I cried forever. Eight Belles defiantly filled Winning Colors shoes, even if she didn’t win the Derby. RIP Winning Colors, Eight Belles, and Ruffian… the greatest fillies ever.
And who won… WINNING COLRS!!!! NOT Forty niner!! So shut up!! And who cares that he passed Winning Colors after the wirer… she was done with the race and YOU KNOW IT!!!!!!! So shut the hell up, you have NOOO evidence that he would have won. Winning Colors was the better HORSE that day…. and that YEAR!!!!
Don’t forget Genuine Risk. She won the 1980 Derby, placed 2nd in the Preakness-which she would have won if Codex hadn’t interfered with her, placed 2nd in the Belmont. She was the only 3 year old that year to run in all 3Triple Crown Races. She died on 8-18-2008-oldest living Derby winner up to that time.
A class act.
amazing race ……. whats this crap that 49er was a length better than winning colors after the finish….i did not know there was 2 finish lines? well wire to wire bitches ….eat it! cause after the race 49er owners were presented with the second winner and a second place check!
My horse was first to the barn ahead of winning colors! what we get for that? i guess were better…..hold up forty niner was loaded up in the truck ahead of winning color which means if your first horse to be loaded for the ride home means ya won right? exactly cause ya race to the wire in kentucky and not to the barn!
Winning Colors won the Kentucky Derby with a great ride by Gary Stevens. She would only 2 of next seven races. It is fair to say she won the Derby fair and square. She was not the best 3 yr old . That award goes to Risen Star who was just a better horse.
She later on in her career developed some breathing problems. She gave Personal Ensign everything she wanted in the 88 BC Distaff. She went out and won the K-Derby vs colts the hardest way possible. On the lead all the way. She was a treasure to watch!!
Pay Day BLEW that one! In true fashion, he always wanted to snip them at the wire. He waited just a couple of seconds too late to bring on 49er. Two more strides and he would have had her. Forty niner was the better horse, but Gary Stevens was the better jocky. I lost my azz on this race. Got beat in the photo 3 TIMES THAT DAY! Should have stayed home and watched it on TV.
Pat was whipping the crap out of 49er long before the 3/8 pole at the top of the strech. Watch the video. It wasn’t the jockey, the horse just couldn’t get rolling until the rest of the field started to tire. Certainly Day was trying to get him moving earlier.
Hello learn to read. Can you read. Maybe you cannot. So I will spell it out for you. Risen Star was a better horse. Just cause a horse doesn’t win the derby doesn’t mean that they are inferior. Winning Colors after the Derby was ordinary. Fact not fiction. If you disagree then you don’t know nothing. Learn to read before you make idiotic responses. Risen Star was just better okay. Winning Colors won the Derby alright. Genuine Risk was better than her. Records do not lie.
Hello: learn to write. It’s ‘because’ not ’cause’ and one ‘doesn’t know anything.’ Your phrase of ‘ you don’t know nothing,’ says it all. You’re entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. I know all about Genuie Risk, Regret, et. al. And I read and avail myself of Websters’ Dictionary. You may want to consider doing that. Cheers! Oh and add another thumbs down. Doesn’t bother me a bit. However, it does tend to irritate Youtube. They do check that daily.Again…Cheers.

There was interference of some kind, even if there was no bumping, Codex forced her out so wide it looks deliberate.

Yeah well then he should’ve won the Derby like his Daddy did if he was the better horse.
