how much the best was menifee?
March 5th, 2008 at 7:20 am
Not a great call by Dave in that one. Yikes.

I’ll give Johnson a pass here on the race call. He had to keep track of-what, 18, 19 horses? That was a ridiculously big field.

This was the first horse race i had ever watched, i had randomly picked Charismatic to win before the race. When he won i became hooked, i was touched by the comeback story of his jockey Chris Antley, i watched all of the triple crown that year and every year since. Charismatic and Antley didnt have their triple crown but they are still champions

20. The same number that run every year in the Kentucky Derby.

Max, your answer made me do a little homework. Only the most recent Derby fields-2005 to 2008-have had 20 starters. In fact, I found that none of the Derbys from ‘85 to ‘04 had 20 horse fields, though a number had 18 or 19. The ‘99 Derby actually had 19 horses. Whether 19 or 20, that’s still a big field for any race caller to keep tabs on!

Clarification-I made it sound as if there were NO 20 horse fields until ‘05, and that would be incorrect, as there were a number of them BEFORE ‘85-and some had more than 20!

LOL at the announcer finally coming alive like half way through the stretch
June 8th, 2008 at 3:21 am
I love the:
DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME!
June 17th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
I think the announcer goes to sleep at 1:24.
July 15th, 2008 at 1:11 am
The announcer in this died today… :/
July 16th, 2008 at 1:34 am
I don’t believe it was THIS announcer. This was Dave Johnson, correct? The announcer who passed away was the track announcer, I think.
Someone want to clarify this?
July 16th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Yes it was Luke Kruytbosch who passed away.. not Dave Johnson..
April 20th, 2009 at 12:20 am
Boy, if you ever wanted a horse who could fold like a card table in the stretch with no real reason other than the fact that he just didn’t feel like winning, you couldn’t do better than Cat Thief.
May 4th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Wow this happened two weeks after Columbine.
May 9th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
lol. dave johnson sounded bord to death, then all of the sudden DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME and he comes alive.

Mine that Bird and Charismatic are similar in the sense that they both were underdogs. They were both not regarded to win the Preakness. Charismatic did. Now we shall see if Mine that bird will tomorrow.

I loved this horse…
May 25th, 2009 at 1:44 am
This announcer was Dave Johnson.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:45 am
Actually Dave Johnson talked about his call in this race. He was so lost with trying to get all of the names of the 20 horses running he simply got out of sorts in the race. It wasn’t one of his better calls but htis is a very tough race to announce because of the number of horses.

Cat thief was on the pace and just got beat in the stratch. I would hardly say he folded like a table. By the way later in his career he won the Breeders Cup Classic for all you know and shoved that one right in your face huh? >

Charismatic is such a beautiful horse!! Do you know what happend to him? He got shiped to the japanese slaughter house! It’s true! search: where racehorses retire.
July 15th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Charismatic is now standing stud in Japan yes but he will not go to slaughter. While visiting ” Old Friends” Rescue and retirement in Kentucky, Michael Blowen said that once he is no longer needed there that he he will brought here to the US to retire along with War Emblem. I can’t wait! He is my favorite horse. If not for the injury, we were looking at the last Triple Crown winner since affirmed.

Thats not true, if he’s dead then why do they have him up for stud still.. Do you not know how to research things? Seriously….
