College football Playoffs?

August 25th, 2011 | admin | How Sports Betting Works

Okay now I know I might possibly be shot here for saying this, but I have to express this thought.

College football is probably the single most important time of the year for me. I LOVE going to games, watching games on TV, the weather, the smell, basically everything about the fall and the college football season.

The difference between college football and pro football to me is a fine line. Dont get me wrong, I LIKE pro football. I am usually watching pro football every Sunday just like most football fanatics.

But… It is not with the same intensity, with the same passion, with the same thought that THIS game is the most important game of the season. You see; what makes college football so great is that EVERY GAME matters. Every game has me on the edge of my seat, Every game I have butterfly’s, and if we lose, every loss breaks my heart. This why I do not think we really want a college playoff. Dont get me wrong, the system we currently have is NOT working, but I am not so sure a playoff is the best option for TRUE college football fans.

Thoughts?

While I definitely agree with you that the BCS has pandered to corporate money and will continue to hurt the game of college football, I disagree with you about the comparative lack of passion and intensity pro football offers. The clear cut playoff system in the pros is a luxury that only a business can provide. A playoff system at the college level would not work due in part to the comparative conference strengths. As an ACC fan, I see teams such as SoCal, Penn St., and Ohio St. rise fairly easily to the top of their respective conferences, but if thrown in the mix of the SEC, these teams would end the season with mediocre W-L records. A playoff system would short change strong conferences and give an unfair advantage to weak conferences. Besides the debates over who is better is part of the fun of being a college fan.

College footballs intensity is way better cause these guys are out there to prove themselves and get to the next level, thats why i like it. Pro is great to but the intensity isnt there like it is with college. GO GOPHERS and we have a new stadium
EDIT: I think a playoff style is in need, the bowl games have really lost there meaning over the years, they are adding bowl games and they just dont really matter much.

I agree with you and in the case of a playoff most fans disregard the obvious and that is injuries. In pro sports all players are very good athletes and possess good skills. This is not the case in college. If one truly wants a national champion that is not determined more by luck (i.e., lack of injuries) then the scholarships need to be increased to develop better players riding the bench. If you increase scholarships then you tend to destroy parity in college football which makes the game so great to watch now. So, I don’t think a playoff system is in the best interest of college.
Case in point, Florida in all likelihood would not have won the National Championship three years ago if they had to start to play in a playoff system because their defensive linemen were all banged up. They barely made it through the SEC Championship game. However, with a month’s rest then you got to see the Florida team at its best. Also, let’s not forget that to come up with a playoff system then you need to level the playing field by all major conferences having 12 teams and a championship game to determine the winner of the conference. Can’t see that happening.

We can rant and rave over this all we want, but the truth to the matter is that if they change it to a playoff, then say goodbye to all those sponsors. Say goodbye to all that money going to the schools for recruiting. College football wouldn’t be the same.
