KENTUCKY DERBY 2009 - MINE THAT BIRD

May 12th, 2010 | admin | How To Win At Sports Betting

In a performance reminiscent of his winning ride aboard Street Sense two years earlier, Calvin Borel hugged the rail throughout then exploded through the stretch to guide Mine That Bird to an improbable 6 3/4-length victory over Pioneerof the Nile in the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The victory capped off a memorable weekend for Borel, who also rode Rachel Alexandra to a one-sided triumph in Friday’s Kentucky Oaks. (Source DRF)

    Mine that Bird did this on my 19th birthday! Mine That Bird was amazing in this race…WOW.

    Kent Desormeaux made a really early move on Hold Me back. If he was held until the turn and made his move with 3 furlongs to go and not after the clubhouse turn. He is a really good jockey though. I just think he makes early moves.

    @StudLife28

    At one point, the Preakness wasn’t even open to geldings.

    Just as impressive of a race by Mine That Bird was Calvins ride and, even more so, his genuine exuberance after winning. Good to see that happen to a journeyman jockey who 1st jumped into the national spotlight aboard Street Sense and then Rachel. Good example of how patience, diligence and a great life-long work ethic does pay off. Not sure if anyone could wipe the smile off his face for months. Good for you CB.

    This was the first horse race I had ever watched. When I saw it, despite my lack of knowledge in the sport I knew I had witnessed something spectacularly amazing

    I love how quick MTB passes horses.

    I know Borel is a fantastic jockey, so nothing against him, but I honestly am annoyed with how people give him all the credit for this win - yes he rode EXTREMELY well, but he also could never have won if Mine The Bird wasn’t such an incredible horse…the speed he shows in the last quarter-mile is unbelievable - for a small underdog horse like him to make a time second to Secretariat is phenomenal and I truly believe Mine That Bird should get a lot more praise than he does.
