“Mine That Bird” Wins 135th Kentucky Derby
Mine That Bird won the 135th Kentucky Derby Saturday in a shocking upset on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs. It went off at 50-1 odds and was the second-biggest underdog ever to win the Derby. It was purchased for just 00 and beat a field that had several horses worth millions. With jockey Calvin Borel aboard, Mine That Bird pulled away from the pack on a stunningly fast stretch run, winning by almost seven lengths.

Mine That Bird is one of the most INCREDIBLE and SPECTACULAR horses I’ve ever seen run! He ran with the wind and with his heart!

But wait! Correct me if I’m wrong, but is that a teabag hanging off that lady’s wrist (lady with the straw hat/blue sash)?
If it is, that would make this fantastic win twice as sweet.

Winners come from New Mexico!!
A $9500 horse is a real “NEW MEXICO” WINNER!
Bloomfield , Roswell, we all share in your joy.
Remember, NEW MEXICO is neither!
From 15,000 year old Sandia Man to the Spaceport, and major studio films (and the best food anywhere!)
Winners come from New Mexico!!
Yeah!

This sucks. This means once again there will be no Triple Crown winner because this horse isnt gonna win the Preakness and Belmont. He was a 50-1 chance, those odds arent good for the next two. Damn it. I want a Triple Crown winner. Isnt there anymore great grandchildren of Secretariat or Affirmed out their.

Nah u got it wrong man. This horse just came into his own today. You heard the announcers, they “changed” his running style today. What happened today was the horse had a bad break at the start, which forced Borel to change his strategy on the horse. This horse had never been run like this before and due to the bad break it looks like Borel and the horses connections have discovered that this horse runs better from off the pace….This horse is a legitimate Triple Crown contender my friend

Could be Mine That Bird is developing at just the right time. I read he ran a speed figure of 105 or so. I really want him to go all the way. I’ll be cheering for him in the Preakness!!

can’t wait to see the wheels come off this bandwagon! all the fans of NM can luckily claim their derby win…but definately won’t get to cheer about a TRIPLE CROWN…which is the true prize. the connections didn’t consider the preakness (at first), prob cause they knew how big a fluke this win was. the trainer said they were just looking to run the belmont and be the upsetter like the daddy (birdstone) was…they won’t make it that far. if they are that dumb, they’ll get stomped like bigbrown

Mike Battaglia to call the next derby, let’s hope. Congrats to Borel.

People have to stop assuming that just because a horse isn’t expensive and has all the right breeding that they can’t win. My friend work at Emerald Down is Seattle and at the New Mexico race track. He picked him to win because he knew that it was a good horse. Money can’t buy you everything. It should be about racing and not how overpriced you can make a horse be.

In case someone didn’t hear, Borel is riding the amazing fillie, Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness and there is NO way Mine that Bird will catch Rachel Alexandra. Borel even knows thats she is the best 3 year old on the planet and that’s why he isn’t even going to bother and get the Triple Crown with the Derby winner. This is unheard of, but makes total sense after seeing a great fillie like Rachel. Just watch her Oaks win for any doubters out there.

True al that..BUT nobody and i mean NOBODY thought MIne That Bird even belonged in the derby let alone win the derby. I guess we’ll know for sure next satuday evening. I’ll still be cheering for the Bird inspite of what will likely happen at the finish line.
May 9th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
all of you”experts” who say Mine That Bird wont win another race have ALREADY been totally discredited by his win in the derby. so who should listen to your picks now??
May 11th, 2009 at 8:50 am
With that turn of foot we seen in the Derby you would think another big effort is within reason. Just because the filly ran a monter race? Just remember, she beat fillies. Also she got real happy on the front end. She wont have it so EZ Saturday.

Can anybody tell me why there is about 5 hours of TV coverage leading up to a two minute race. Not to be a jerk but there are only so many hats that you can look at.

Calvin Borel told Tom Durken he is Queer for ike Smith and wants to choke his chicken while Smith minds his bird.
