SECRETARIAT in the Kentucky Derby
Click HorseRaceGame.com Subscribe gfn02 and rate this video! There are many videos in the SECRETARIAT Project right now, but only some are public. Subscribers can see them all! Once you’ve subscribed visit my channel, click PLAYLISTS, then watch “SECRETARIAT The Movie”. Because of the volcanic eruption of greatness displayed in the Belmont 5 weeks after this race, SECRETARIAT’S performance in the Kentucky Derby often gets overshadowed. Make no mistake; it’s the greatest Derby performance of all-time.

Phar Lap?

I think Secretariat makes all the music himself with those pounding hoofs in perfect unison. Agreed?(smile)
I believe Secretariat is a head & shoulder better than the rest that ever ran a race track. Especially the Derby & Belmont. Of all the races I have ever watched never seen a horse that could cover ground as fast as Secretariat. Tremendous burst of speed he possessed.& could hold it as well, very well even at long distances.

Thats an insult to even mention Phar Lap good buddy in the same league with Secretariat.. Thats like bringing the pigeons to the cat. Of course the cat is Secretariat.(smile)

Sham got so screwed. Any other year he almost definitely would have been a triple crown winner. Damn fine horse, but Secretariat was better. Seabiscuit? I hate like hell to admit it, but I think Secretariat could’ve taken the old ‘Biscuit.

Secretariat was fantastic. He was the horse who did things first and really set the bar, who could go to the top and keep going. But I always thought Kelso was more versatile and went the distance more overall.

Sham ran the race of his life that day, and still lost to Big Red by two lengths. Sham’s finish that day would still be the Kentucky Derby record today if not for Secretariat. Sham and hi s jockey Pincay must have been completely demoralized after this race.

Phar Lap. What in the heck is that, some kind of siding that goes on a house?(smile)
February 7th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
I don’t know if you can see this but when Secretariat comes up to Sham and Laffit Pincay is aware of what is suddenly happening, if you just keep your eyes on Sham and watch when Pincay gives him the stick, you can see Sham really accelerate and, yet, Big Boy is STILL pulling away!

I’ve watched it with the music and without and much prefer the music. I like how it starts off, then builds up, suits it perfectly, anyway if people dont like it why watch it, but dont diss it!

you wonder if he had a perfect trip, instead of passing a large field of horses around the outside of two long turns, what he would have run that day…1:58??
thank the Lord we do know what it would look like for a mile and a half: 2:24.
I had a friend do calculations on how long it would have taken Secretariat to break the sound barrier if he kept acclerating the way he did in the Derby…somewhat over 55 hours of running if i remember right…you doubt Secretariat could do it??? i don’t.

Incredible race! But the music really detracts. Horse racing lovers don’t need dramatic music to make them feel something, and will prefer to be able to hear the announcer.

Running that last quarter in 23 seconds flat is something else & to run each quarter faster than the previous one blows your mind. That was never done before in a 1 1/4 mile race & still no horse has ever done that. Yelp, the way he was acclerating he could had ran another quarter in 22 flat shattering his time in the Belmont. by 2 3/5 seconds.

I still get choked up watching that 37 years later. The greatest horse ever!
May 21st, 2010 at 4:13 pm
@tucsonia The mother of Secretariat, Something Royal was a sister of the mother of Sham. Sequoia, both had the same father, Princequillo(Ire), so, they were cousins….the triple crown was still in the family

Shecky Green was a champion sprint horse & Forego a great champion.. 4 other horses were champions in the M.C. Secreatariat beat 6 champion horses as a 3 year old. 4 of the champions were 4 year olds. What other horse ever done this??
May 26th, 2010 at 6:41 am
@gfn02 I don’t even think Turcoote would had to hit him with a whip just coming out of that real wide turn he made. But I guess Ron did not take any chances. Running every quarter faster than the previous ones just show how strong this monster was. No horse ever in history has done that in a 1 1/4 mile race. Not even horses at 4, 5, 6 or older. Secretariat haters never mention this feat.

gfn02 thank you so much for this memory. secretariat was the greatewst athlete in my lifetime.
June 7th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
Angle Light- “But dude, I beat you at the Wood!”
Secretariat- “Yeah, but you finished 10th at the Derby and I became an immortal…”LOL Sham- “Stupid mutated heart…D’oh!!”

BararbaAnne Helberg fine article of ‘Clocking The Derby’ in her last words. Quote:.
Secretariat remains the master of pure speed.

@gfn02 where was the music at the beginning from? I assume it’s a movie sound track, but I don’t know which one.
