The final decision will be made by the TOTAL purse money won, with Graded stakes winnings counting for the most. There are some rich races coming up, and every year it all comes down to the week before the derby. You will see new "contenders" every week, but like I said it all comes down to money earned. There will be a lot of horses sitting on the "bubble", waiting to see if one horse drops out so they can get in.

Nobiz Like Shobiz is a very green 3 yr old who tends to lug in during the stretch run.Great Hunter certainly ran an impressive race at Santa Anita last Saturday.

You will find out who is running on Wed. May 2nd. That’s when the entries are drawn, if there are over 20 entries then the horses in the top 20 on the Graded earnings list are in the field. However, just because a horse is in the top 20 on the list does not mean it will be entered. They list the horses that currently look good as their contenders, but many Derby winners in the past (Monarchos, War Emblem, Giacomo, Funny Cide) were not even on or close to the contenders list at this point of the year. They were all deep down on the contenders list at this point. The name of this game is patience, in another month and a half you will have a pretty good idea who is running, then someone might pull a Dantheblugrassman and screw up the projected field at entry time.

If you go to the contenders page Nobiz is there.

And I wouldn’t count my horses before they’ve ran. Or are at least in the gate. Too many a good horse has had to withdraw from a race due to illness or injury. Early listing is no guarantee they will make it to race day.

It’s still too early to say. A lot could happen between now and the first Saturday in May. Here’s the second future wagers list, not all of these horses will make it.

They’re not really picked yet. Those are the contenders based on who is leading in the money so far. If those horses don’t win another race before the Derby and someone else steps up and wins a bunch, the horses on the Derby website won’t run the Derby. The Derby website lists the horses that are doing really well up to this point as the horses that are likely to run, so you should watch. But there are many that are not listed there. And something like 300 horses have qualified as of January… obviously all 300 cannot run… but they’re all contending for the 20 spots. There’s a lot of horses… the Derby website lists the leaders at this point. But a completely different 20 horses could run the race. The Derby lists the leaders just like the NTRA website lists the 10 leading horses and jockeys for the year.

Actually the other questions when we said it’s too early to tell were questions about who would win. Even if the 11 are the only horses to run that race, it is too early to tell. They’ve all won a bunch of races, but they all could grow and become a little more disciplined by May. And even though we’ve seen them all race, we haven’t seen them all race each other. They’ve raced a bunch of other horses their age who haven’t done as well as they have. Circular Quay and Notional raced each other and Nobiz, Scat Daddy, and Stormello raced each other. And Great Hunter raced Street Sense… but even out of those groupings, a race in May will be completely different… even races a couple weeks apart (the Triple Crown races) will be different. We should start knowing who is definately running in April and we can make our predictions about who will win in the last weeks before the race. Even then, it’s all speculation. The last 2 years, the favorites who had done well before the Derby and were expected to win, did very little in the actual race. Neither horse finished the Crown… Brother Derek and Bellamy Road (true, he didn’t race for an injury), each of which had won a lot of their races (6/8 and 4/5 respectively)… and the fact is, in the last 27 years, only 2 favorites have ever won the Derby. One newspaper article compared Bellamy Road to Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed. 2 very long shots have won in recent years: Charismatic and Giacomo: neither horse got much attention at all before the race… and I don’t remember hearing much about Barbaro except how inexperienced he was. We can speculate all we want and indeed, one of us is bound to be right… but we won’t know until the first Saturday in May. It is too early to tell… but that’s not to say we can’t speculate until then, especially after each of the 3 year olds’ races. I’m looking forward to seeing Circular Quay this weekend… I only wish I got to go home and watch it on TVG instead of watching the little replay on NTRA ;o)
